Twitter needs to be distributed

Dave is talking about twitter again.

I read a little bit of the comments on that particular post. David Geller made a comment that I absolutely agree with: "Twitter is not an open, user supported community tool. It's a VC backed commercial entity with goals of rapid growth and, eventually, revenue." Even the United States Department of Defense realized that centralization was an extremely bad idea when they started ARPANET.

I disagree with Dave's request for a meeting with Twitter and the tech community. I would rather see us (the community) just replicate Twitter's premise and turn it into the community tool that we need.

I have a rough draft proposal if you'd like to go take a look. If you'd like to contribute changes to this, send me an e-mail or just write in the comments.

We probably should set up a Yahoo or Google group as a place to talk about it.

What do you think?

Crazy Stupid Idea

A friend of mine has given me a new book to read, Rule #1: The Simple Strategy for Successful Investing in Only 15 Minutes a Week. As of the time of this writing, it has 79 five star ratings on Amazon.com. It has 127 total ratings for a combined 4.5. Sounds like a winner to me. After reading up to chapter 5, I got a CrazyStupidIdea™.

This gentleman, Phil Town, is describing a way to measure the health of a company. He defines healthy as more than 10% growth per year over a steady period of 10 years. Not having read the rest of the book yet, I'm assuming that if you invest in these companies (using his strategy), you'll never lose money. This still sounds like a winner to me.

What if I applied my skills as a software developer to help me in investing?

Here are the tools that I'm proposing to bring to bear in this endeavor:

I've created a new blog category which I can use to log the progress on this CrazyStupidIdea. I also created a new Investing category to track what I learn from the new book as well.

The tools that come out of this will of course be released under an open source license of some sort, so that others can benefit from the work that I did.

Just started reading The Art of Computer Programming by Donald Knuth

This isn’t a new years resolution. Just like Jeff Atwood (http://www.codinghorror.com) loves Steve McConnell, I love Donald Knuth.

I would love to record my learning experiences to my blog as Atwood has.

Comcast “On Demand” Service sucks in Fair Oaks, California

I don't know if it is a hardware/network issue in our area. I've attempted to use this service at various times during the day for the last couple of weeks. Only during the late time hours (1-2 AM) have I been able to access the service.

"Communications Error" and "META-6" come up a lot.

Technical support staff is of little or no help via their 800 number that is flashed on screen next to the error message.

I'll have to investigate further.

What are you up to right now?

If you would like an answer to that question go here.

I've created an account at a site called Twitter whose sole purpose is to help its users answer that question and broadcast it to the rest of the world.

Who just called me?

Cool resource I just found via Google: whocalled.us. I just received a call from (702) 818-2457. They left a 5 second dead air message. Wanting to find out more, I did a quick search and found these guys. Apparently, they've been making a lot of very similar calls to the one I received and are generally making a lot of people angry.

Stupid Easy Business Model

I should have at least 5 ideas in the idea journal that are at least as easy as this one. Todd, I think the coupon/referral site idea that you had fits perfectly!

Link: Connections and Connection Management in IIS

Just letting Google index this so that I can find it again later.

Windows XP Professional runs IIS versino 5.1 and is only allowed up to 10 concurrent connections.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262635

By default IIS only allows 2 outbound connections.  This can be a problem when integrating a web service into a web application.

I'm playing around with this peice of software.  This would be the first post.  I'm liking it so far.  It feels very similar to OneNote and Word.
